School Days

Gavin has been in school for a few months now (two more than when these pictures were actually taken, sadly), so I figured a post on school was in order.  To sum, he LOVES school.  No complaints about going, in fact, we get far more complaints about it being a weekend than anything else.  I can't say that he is or has learned anything he didn't know before (if you know Gavin, you know he is a third grader in a kindergartner's body), but he has sure had fun anyway.  FYI, we are anti- "save all the school work" in this family, so pictures will preserve his favorites from here on out.

So...one child off to school for 3 hours each day...what do the rest of us do with the time?  A little of everything.  Emma is on her one nap a day schedule, so generally "school time" for her equals nap time.  But she manages to get her own "educational" time other ways.  Like this Leap Frog word builder we got for Tristan's birthday.  She loves the thing- very possibly more than Tristan does.

And speaking of Tristan...sometimes I wonder about him.  There are days he seems to enjoy the time to himself- something he hasn't had since birth, especially with he and Gavin being so close.  He can call the shots in his own games of pretend, and as you can tell, that is a pretty happy thing.  But, there are also days when he really misses having a constant playmate/companion.  Mom doesn't always cut it.  Overall, he enjoys quiet time shows, computer time, and living uninterrupted in his own little world.  He is such a good kid.

And once in a while, especially in kindergarten, there will be a special event that can involve the whole family.  Humpty Dumpty Day was just such an event.
We "fashioned" our containers...
Gavin really wanted a parachute, but mom wasn't so sure that alone would cut it.  So we took a look see at the internet and came up with a few other back up designs- put a few together and vio la!  An egg covered in bubble wrap and felt, placed INSIDE a foam ball and attached to a parachute.

Once the big day finally came around...they waited...
and waited...
and waited until finally Principal Gutridge appeared!  Megaphone in hand, he called the students name and dropped their eggs off the roof.  Some, fashioned in paper cups and toilet paper (or something similar), you could hear splat on the cement below.  Others, packaged a little more creatively, dropped nicely- results unknown.  But Gavin's...
took FLIGHT!  Not even the other parachute designs flew like his did, much to the excitement of the audience.  He received applause...

and even a hug from his "too soon to be interested in the opposite gender" friend.
Next step:  unwrap the containers and check the damage.
Note to readers and future egg drop participants:  it worked.  I don't have to tell you how happy he was.

To conclude the day, the kindies performed a little Humpty Dumpty song and dance including the words "Hey!  Aint that funky now?"  Again, I don't have to tell you how much Gavin got into that one.  Priceless.

So, all in all, we are loving school.  We'll see if that continues.
